South Rawah Peak | Rawah Wilderness

August 2016

Setting out from the West Branch trailhead in the Rawah Wilderness, the day was overcast and brooding, adding an air of mystery to the journey ahead. The trail meandered through dense forests and across creeks, leading me toward Twin Crater Lakes.

I ascended from Twin Crater Lakes toward Rockhole Lake, where the landscape transformed into a rugged terrain of boulders and crags. It was then that the name 'Rockhole' made perfect sense as I navigated through the rocky landscape.

Morning broke with a spectacular sunrise, painting the sky with many colors, briefly banishing the storm clouds that lingered overhead. Eager to seize the day, I set off towards South Rawah Peak, where the panoramic views of the wilderness and North Park unfolded before me. The rugged peaks and sprawling valleys stretched out as far as the eye could see.

Descending from the peak, I traversed through Grass Pass. Passing by more pristine alpine lakes, including a serene stop at Camp Lake, I paused to gather more energy before the final stretch. The way back to the trailhead was long and arduous, but the memories of this wilderness adventure would linger long after I returned home.
